Torchère
Brooklyn Trust Company, Brooklyn, NY

The building was designed by architects York & Sawyer, known for their designs for banks including the Federal Reserve in Manhattan. The Academic Classical style was popular in wake of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.

The building and the torchères are based on Renaissance prototypes.  Constructed in several tiers the lamp base represents the earthly realm with four mythical lions, above the water realm is represented by turtles. The plant kingdom with scrolling acanthus leaves, nuts and fruits, gives way to the air with soaring birds. Finally the top of the lamp is a globe of light - perhaps the light representing man's crowning glory.
